Knights of Columbus

About the Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus were founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut on March 29, 1882, and was officially chartered as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of: Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in 1882 to over 15,900 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

The Knights were formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

About Our Council:

The  Knights of Columbus at Christ the King was chartered on February 27, 1947 at "St. Teresa of Avila Council #2961". Our Council is so named due to a  special devotion to our Council's patron saint.

The Council currently stands at about 90 members of all ages, and continues to grow. We are all dedicated to the principals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity. We are pleased to have as our Chaplain, Father Terrence Walsh, the current Pastor of Christ the King Parish.

Council #2961 is served by St. Teresa of Avila Assembly #129, which was chartered on December 15, 1953 - which is the Fourth Degree and dedicated to Patriotism and meets separately from the Council.

What We Do:

Council #2961 is a very motivated, visible and active Council. Many of our members serve in all aspects of Parish Life as Ushers, Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion.

Our Council works closely with Christ the King Parish and its community by providing funds and services for various projects and activities.  The Knights sponsor a monthly Pancake Breakfasts and various dinners throughout the year.

Our members are proud to participate in the Knights of Columbus annual Tootsie Roll Drive, which raises funds for organizations that serve people with intellectual disabilities; and Coats for Kids where we donate new winter coats to children in less fortunate Parishes.

The Council is guided by the Knights of Columbus “Faith in Action” program model by coordinating its programs and efforts towards Faith, Family, Community and Life.
